Lee Theatre’s last production of the semester, “Meet Me in St. Louis,” will take place in the Dixon Center Auditorium April 5 and 6 and 11 through 13 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee showing April 7 at 2:30 p.m.
“Meet me in St. Louis” is a wonderful evening of theatre that is sure to provide great entertainment for your family,” said Dr. Christine Williams, associate professor of theatre and director of the play. “I think this show is also a great reminder of the importance of family, tradition, and community. We are excited to present this fun musical with delightful songs and exciting dances to our local community.”
“Meet Me in St. Louis” is a joint production between Lee University Theatre and the School of Music. In addition to Williams, Professor of Voice Dr. Ron Brendel will conduct and co-direct the musical, along with Dr. Chery Brendel, vocal instructor, with choreography by Heidi Longwith, part-time instructor of dance for the stage classes in the Theatre program. The production includes a 25-student cast and orchestra comprising 10 student instrumentalists.
Based on the heartwarming MGM film, “Meet Me in St. Louis” is a rare treasure in the musical theatre, a wholesome and delightful portrait of a turn-of-the-century American family. It is the summer of 1903, and the Smith family eagerly anticipates the opening of the 1904 World’s Fair. Over the course of a year, the family’s mutual respect, tempered with good-natured humor, helps them through romance, opportunity, and heartbreaks.
Memorable musical numbers include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “The Boy Next Door,” “The Trolley Song,” and “Whenever I’m with You.”
“Such a major production means many weeks of hard work,” said Brendel. “But in the end, it all comes together with a big smile on opening night. We hope everyone will come out for some great fun and join us on the trolley!”
